Daniel Ashton "Dan" Lyles Obituary

Daniel Ashton Lyles, 93, husband of Dorothy “Dotty” Mathis Lyles, died Thursday, July 2, 2026, at Prisma Health Richland in Columbia.


Born October 12, 1932, in Sumter he was a son of the late Clifford Leroy Lyles and the late Agnes Claire Stokes Lyles. Mr. Lyles was a member of First Baptist Church Sumter, and a past member of Grace Baptist Church. He graduated from Edmunds High School in 1951. He worked with Western Auto before joining City Supply Company as an outside salesman. His territory included South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia where he established many loyal customers and friendships. He served as Vice President of City Supply Company until 1997 when the Company was purchased by Ferguson Waterworks. He continued with Ferguson as a training executive for two more years. Mr. Lyles was an avid fan of the South Carolina Gamecocks and long-time member of the Gamecock Club.


He was affectionately known as “Bop” (Best Old Person) to his family and friends who knew him well. “Bop” loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, tremendously and was a true example of a follower of Christ. His faith was often expressed in one of his favorite quotes, “I’ll trust the good Lord…He’s never let me down!”


Survivors include his wife of sixty years; two children, Charles “Chuck” Van Patten and Paige Lyles Stokes (Danny),; six grandchildren, Todd Brown (Gaffney), Amber Van Patten McGarity (Colin), Mary Daniel Stokes Griffith (Austin), Luke Stokes (Ansley), Samuel Finn Lyles, and Georgia Claire Lyles; Six great grandchildren, Ashton Brown, McLendon Brown, Elle Brown, Baker McGarity, Kixx Stokes, and Emily Griffith; one brother, Bill Lyles (Shirley); one sister, Jean Redmond; three sisters-in-law, Nancy Lyles, Gloria Lyles, and Van Lyles; and a number of nieces and nephews.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two children, Heather Lyles and Dr. Mark A. Lyles; four brothers, Harold Lyles, Ken Lyles, Gerald “Jerry” Lyles, and Cong Lyles; and three sisters, Doris Fernander, Sybil Gaskin, and Carol Bradham.


Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church Sumter with the Rev. Dr. Dan Barber and the Rev. Dr. Ron Richardson officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.


Pallbearers will be Todd Brown, Luke Stokes, Finn Lyles, Colin McGarity, Austin Griffith, Gerald Lyles, Bryce Lyles and Blake Lyles.


Honorary Pallbearers will be Rob Watson, John Moses, Mickey Brewer, Wayne Lowder, Scott Estep, Terrence Lonon, and members of the ROMEO Club.


The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Sumter First Baptist Church and other times at the home of Danny and Paige Stokes.
