Obituary for Phillip Alan Steele

Phillip Alan Steele, 81, husband of Betty-Routh Barron Steele, died Sunday, June 4, 2023, at his home.

Born September 26, 1941, in Houston, AR, he was a son of the late Doyle William Steele and the late Ruth Hill Steele. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 21 years of service and was a Vietnam War veteran. He earned his bachelor’s degree in math while serving. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he received his bachelor’s degree in computer science. He worked twenty-five years as a computer programmer with EMS-Chemi and taught Computer Science at Sumter Area Technical College for two summer sessions. He was an avid reader. Mr. Steele was a member of the Sumter Genealogical Society, the Sumter Touchdown Club, the American Legion Post 15, and Sumter Family YMCA. He attended Crosswell Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years; a son, CSM Marc Alan Steele (Karen) of Columbia; a grandson, Cameron Garrett Steele; a brother Darryl Steele (Kay) of Greenbrier, AR; a sister, Patricia Kidder (Wade) of Beebe, AR; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Routh Steele.

A funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Nathan Timmons officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Seekers Sunday Class of Crosswell Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 A.M. Saturday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.

The family requests everyone to honor his memory by participating in a community litter pick-up.
