Obituary for Robert Earl Hillman

Robert Earl “Bob” Hillman of Sumter, SC, 96 years old, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

Born January 5, 1927, in Dungannon, Virginia, he was the son of the late Nell and Barnett Hillman. He was the oldest of seven children. He was a retired Chief Master Sergeant whose United States Air Force career spanned more than 23 years. He also served three years in the United States Navy. During his United States Air Force career, he performed maintenance and repair on various aircraft. He taught many classes also. The later portion of his career focused on public relations and human resources. He said that he loved his career because every mission that he was assigned gave him the opportunity to do his best in every situation. His work ethic was unmatched. He was the manager of Sumter SC Employment Service for 20 years. He implemented many training programs to enhance the Sumter work force. He taught electronics at what is now Central Carolina Technical College. He was a SC State Constable appointed by the governor of SC.

Bob was dedicated to his family, country, and Christian faith. Bob demonstrated all the qualities that a father and grandfather should have such as loving, hardworking, loyal, determined, responsible, dependable, and faithful. Bob was an avid outdoorsman who fished and hunted. He was a member of Horatio and Maxie Branch Hunt Clubs.

Bob was a member of the American Legion. He was a staunch Republican, an NRA supporter, and an advocate for veteran’s rights.

Bob is survived by his daughters, Mary Hillman Pardue (Mike) of Sunset Beach, NC and Cynthia Carol Hillman of Sumter; his son, Joseph Lee Hillman of Sumter; and grandchildren, Robert Andrew “Andy” Hillman, Joseph Tyler Hillman, Alexander Michael “Alex” Pardue, and Kayla Brooke Hillman.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Doris Jean Hillman; and a son, Robert Staunton Hillman.

A funeral service to honor Robert Earl Hillman’s legacy will be held at 12 Noon Friday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel, 515 Miller Rd, Sumter, SC 29150 officiated by the Rev. Dr. Robert White. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, 802 N. Guignard Dr., Sumter, SC 29150.

Pallbearers will be Kayla Hillman, Joseph Tyler Hillman, Robert Andrew Hillman, and James Michael Pardue.

The family will receive friends from 11 A.M. to 12 Noon Friday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.
