Obituary for James Orum Oliver Sr.

James Orum Oliver, Sr. 90, husband of Emogene Anderson Oliver, died Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at his home.

Born August 17, 1932, in Florence County, he was a son of the late Willard Oliver and the late Bessie Cusaac Oliver. Mr. Oliver was an active member and past deacon of Grace Baptist Church. He also served as an usher and enjoyed sharing his love of cooking for church events. He owned and operated Oliver Shoes and Branford Bootery. Mr. Oliver was active in the community as a member of the Sumter JayCees, Sumter Optimist Club, and American Legion Post 15. He was also a Master Mason, licensed real estate agent, and past Secretary and Treasurer of the Tri-County Seniors Golf Association.

Survivors in addition to his wife of seventy years include two sons, James O. “Jan” Oliver, Jr. and Kent Oliver (Neecie); three grandchildren, Renee Oliver (Tom Voyt), Jamie Oliver (Stacy), and Blake Brookens (Chris); seven great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kerwin Louis Oliver, a daughter-in-law, Pam W. Oliver, and ten siblings.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel officiated by the Rev. Dr. Steve Williams. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ryan Rickman, Chris Brookens, Tom Voyt, David Oliver, Randy Rogers, and Jimmy Vause.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.
