Obituary for Billy R. Coleman

Sergeant Major Billy R. Coleman USA, ret., 81, died Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Prisma Health Tuomey.

Born August 2, 1941, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Clarence Coleman, Sr. and the late Rhoda Mae Hickson Coleman. Mr. Coleman was a member of Southside Baptist Church and the Gideons International - Sumter Camp. He was a member of American Legion Post 15 and was a long-time member of the P-15 Baseball Committee. He owned and operated several businesses including Coleman’s Grocery, Purco Trucking, Sumter Tire, and B Rentals.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Rebecca I. Coleman of Sumter; three children, Steven Coleman (Gloria) and Terry Coleman (Rhonda) both of Sumter, and Pamela Coleman Alderman (Tim) of Elgin; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two brothers, James “Jim” Coleman, and Robert “Bob” Coleman; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Marion “Buck” Coleman, Jesse “Jack” Coleman, LeRoy “Roy” Coleman, and Clarence Coleman, Jr.; and one sister, Virginia Coleman Bowen Powell.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel officiated by the Rev. Tommy Atkinson and the Rev. Jimmy Holley. Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be members of the American Legion Post 15 Baseball Committee.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of Terry and Rhonda Coleman, 2000 Plowden Mill Road.
