Obituary for MSGT Richard H. "Dick" Nelson

MSGT Richard H. “Dick” Nelson USAF (retired), 86, husband of Betty Bolyn Nelson, died Monday, February 20, 2023, at Prisma Health Tuomey.

Born November 9, 1936, in Stacy, MN, he was a son of the late Leonard Nelson and the late Agnes Marian Nordin Nelson Reed. Mr. Nelson retired from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years of service. He was a Vietnam War veteran and Purple Heart recipient. Following his military retirement, he was the owner of Nelson’s Heating and Air. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. He was also an avid bowler. He was formerly a longtime member of Hickory Road Baptist Church and currently a member of Shaw Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years; three children, Debra “Debby” Nelson Jacobson (David) of OR, Richard H. “Rick” Nelson, Jr. (Renee) of Sumter, and Leonard “Lenny” Nelson (Scarlett) of Dalzell; six grandchildren, Cory Nelson (Trish), Troy Nelson (Jessica), Megan Turnquist (Nathan), MSGT Richard Kyle Jacobson, USAF (Kay), Charles Nelson (Amy), and Christina Farmer (Phillip); 18 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Gloria Lindquist, Vivian Daly (Frank), Jeri Williams, and Carolyn Stensby (Ron) all of MN; sisters-in-law, Sally Poston of Pamplico and Judy Danner (Gary) of FL; special friends, Rick Esperline, the McDaniel family, Jackie, and Leonard; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Claire Nelson and Charles Nelson; and his stepfather, Leroy Reed.

A memorial service will be held at 1 P.M. Friday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Robert White officiating. Burial with full military honors will be held at 3 P.M. in the Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

Grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 P.M. Friday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.
