Obituary for John Zelano

John Zelano, 80, widower of Margie Ann Roberts Zelano, died Sunday, February 6, 2023, at Prisma Health Tuomey.

Born December 3, 1942, in Danvers, Massachusetts, he was a son of the late Joseph Zelano, Sr. and the late Germaine Gagnon Zelano. He was a 1961 graduate of Holton High School in Danvers and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina. Mr. Zelano retired from the U.S. Air Force after 23 years of service, and later from International Paper. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed drawing, woodworking, and playing chess. He was a member of the Sumter Coin Club, and an honorary member of Nu Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.

Survivors include two children, Paul Zelano (Angela) of High Point, NC, and Diane Zelano Glasscock of Sumter; two grandsons, Zachary Ellis Glasscock, and Tyler John Glasscock; one brother, Joseph “Rocky” Zelano, Jr. (Patricia) of Hilton Head Island; a special cousin, Patsy LeBlanc; and several nieces and nephews and cousins.

A memorial service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Sumter First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Dan Barber.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday in the First Baptist Church fellowship hall.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staffs of Prisma Health Tuomey and Sumter East Health and Rehab Center for the exceptional care they provided.
