Obituary for Mary Heriot Goff

Mary Heriot Goff, 88, died Friday, February 3, 2023, at McLeod Health-Clarendon in Manning.

Born December 6, 1934, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Newell Cullen Griffin and Mamie Harvin Griffin. Mrs. Goff was a teacher, librarian, and a member of the Pinewood United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and served in various positions as long as she was able. She was a graduate of Pinewood High School and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of South Carolina. She taught at Summerton Elementary School, Clarendon Hall Academy, Lower Lee Elementary, and Fleming Middle School. She pursued a life-long interest in family and church history. In 1953, she married McDonald (Donnie) Green Heriot, a farmer in the Pinewood area with whom she raised four children. He died in 1986. Later, she married Lawrence Goff of Rimini: they had eleven years together before his death in 2006.

She is survived by her three daughters, Mary Jean Heriot, Sara Carolyn Heriot Padgett, and Mamie Griffin Heriot Morgan, and one son, McDonald (Don) Green Heriot, Jr.; her son-in-law Franklin Morgan, and three grandchildren, Benjamin Morgan, Hannah Morgan Reed (married to Chaz Reed), and Robert Padgett. She is also survived by her brother, Cullen Griffin and his wife Madeline, and her sister, Sara Frances Shuster.

She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Dean Padgett.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 5, 2023, at Pinewood United Methodist Church with Pastor Mary Everhart officiating. The funeral will be followed by a graveside burial service at Rembert Church in Lee County.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, February 4, 2023, at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.
