Obituary for Lawrence Mackey Bonner

Lt Colonel Lawrence Mackey Bonner, USAF Retired, 80, husband of Patricia Bane Bonner, died Thursday, January 12, 2023, at Prisma Health Tuomey.

Born January 1, 1943, in Hot Springs, VA, he was a son of the late William “Bill” G. Bonner and the late Doris Haynes Bonner. He was an active and dedicated member of Sumter First Church of the Nazarene. LtCol Bonner retired from the U.S. Air Force after serving more than twenty-three years and was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War. He received his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree from Northern Arizona University. Following his retirement, he worked as a sales agent with MetLife Insurance Company.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years; three children, Chris Bonner of MI, Corey Bonner (Stephanie) of Saluda, and Courtney Bonner (Kas Butler) of MI; five grandchildren, Makenzie Bonner, Christian Bonner, Kaitlyn Bonner, Jacob Bonner, and Matthew Bonner; two sisters, Suzanne Green (Willie) and Judy McElwee (Keith) both of Hot Springs, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service with full military honors will be held at 2 P.M. Saturday, January 21, 2023, at Sumter First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Greg Pressley officiating. Burial will be in the Arlington National Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be Sumter First Church of the Nazarene Men’s Ministry, Virginia Tech ROTC, the “Throw a Nickle on the Grass Society, Double Ugly Pilots and Maintenance Society, and anyone with a sense of Esprit de Corp.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Sumter First Church of the Nazarene and other times at the home.
