Obituary for Dorothy Evelyn Buckner (Ray)

Dorothy Evelyn Ray Buckner, 89, widow of Vernon “Chic” Buckner, died Thursday, December 8, 2022, at her home.

Born January 13, 1933, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Bertrand Ray and the late Gladys Benenhaley Ray. She was a member of Springbank Baptist Church. She was a devoted Christian woman who shared the Lord with all she met. She alone brought many others to the Lord. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to so many. She will be truly missed.

Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Smyrl (Mike) of Columbia and Audrey “Robbie” Adams of Dalzell; five granddaughters, Amanda Webb, Allison Smyrl, Jennifer Newton, Janet Lainé, and Julie Adams; three great-grandchildren, Paige Moore, Harper Hennessy, and James Daniel Hennessy; and siblings, Frances Wagner of Sumter, Glenn Michael Ray (Cathy) of Dalzell, and Mazie Skladanek (Joe) of Northfield, NJ.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia “Peach” Webb; a brother, Ansley Ray; and a sister, Mertis Benenhaley.

A funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. Monday at Springbank Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Miller and the Rev. Kevin Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Greg Ray, Jack Buckner, Ansley Ray, Jr., Berry Ray, Jonathan French, and Jeff French.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 A.M. Monday at Springbank Baptist Church and other times at the home.
