Obituary for Violet Lucille Hanisch (Bunte)

Violet Lucille Hanisch, 100, died on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at her home in Mayesville, South Carolina. She was the widow of Leon G. Hanisch.

Born January 13, 1922, in West Point, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Charlie and Gussie Mae Bunte.

Lucille retired in May of 1984, as Mayewood School Cafeteria Manager in Sumter School District 2 after 20 years of dedicated service. She also served as Wednesday Night Hostess at First Baptist Church in Sumter for 16 years. A strong, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she served as Sunday school teacher in Sumter at Lemira Presbyterian Church until Leon’s retirement from the Air Force in 1962 when they moved to Mayesville where she again served as a Sunday school teacher at Mayesville Presbyterian Church. At the time of her death, Lucille was the oldest member of the Mayesville Presbyterian Church congregation. She was awarded the Life Membership Award from the church in 2016. She was Chairman of the Women’s Night Circle for several years. She also was a Girl Scout troop leader in Texas, Mississippi, and South Carolina.

Lucille is survived by her daughter, Linda Ingram and her special friend, Baxter Pierson, of Sumter; son, David Hanisch and daughter-in-law, Elaine “Maggie” Hanisch of Sumter; daughter, Sharon Burkett and son-in-law, Rick Burkett of Lexington; grandchildren, Ginger Wilfong (Jeff) of Raleigh, NC, Leslie Ingram, Jr. (Diane) of Camden, David L. Hanisch, Jr. (Jane) of Charlotte, NC, Stacy Hanisch of Sumter, and step-granddaughter, Andrea Collins of Lexington; great-grandchildren, Matthew Wilfong (Katie) of Apex, NC, Claire Wilfong of Raleigh, NC, Charlton Ingram (Anna) of Elgin, and Carson and Landon Collins of Lexington; step-great-grandchildren, Chris Billings (Nicole) of Sumter and Travis Billings (Shelby) of Spartanburg; step-great-great-grandchildren, Damion Billings of Camden and Grant Billings of Sumter; and brother, Lawrence Bunte of Corryton, Tennessee. In addition, she is survived by nieces and nephews in Texas, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, William Bunte, Raymond Bunte, and Edwin Bunte, Sr.; her sister, Bonnie Taylor; son-in-law, Leslie C. Ingram, Sr.; and step-grandson, Christopher Burkett.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be held at 4:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 26, 2022, in the Mayesville Black River Cemetery (US 76 East) with the Rev. Dr. Brian Peake officiating. Immediately following the service, a reception will be held at the Mayesville Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall at 109 W. Sumter St., Mayesville, SC.

Pallbearers will be Charlton Ingram, Matthew Wilfong, Chris Billings, Travis Billings, Tommy Watts, and Bobby Jones.

Honorary pallbearers will be Leslie C. Ingram, Jr. and David L. Hanisch, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mayesville Black River Cemetery, P.O. Box 441, Mayesville, SC 29104, or to Mayesville Presbyterian Church, 109 W. Sumter St., Mayesville, SC 29104.
