Obituary for Charles Wesley "Charlie" Jones

Charles Wesley “Charlie” Jones, 97, widower of Willie Maude Solesby Jones, died Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at Sumter Grove Senior Living.

Born January 3, 1925, in Monks Corner, he was a son of the late Rev. James W. Jones, Sr., and the late Emmie Marvin Jones. Mr. Jones was a member of Sumter First Church of the Nazarene. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He retired from The Sumter Daily Item. After retirement he went to work part time for the Sumter YMCA and remained employed with them until his early 90’s.

Survivors include two sons, Dr. Charles Wayne Jones (Christine Kodman-Jones) of Philadelphia, and Barry A. Jones (Anderson Nichols) of Salem, MA; two granddaughters, Kayla Jones and Ana Jones; three siblings, Rev. Bob Jones of Rock Hill, Rev. Sam Jones of Nashville, and Sarah Smith of Fort Mill; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Rev. Marvin Jones, James W. “Bill” Jones, Jr., and Rev. Joe Jones.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sumter First Church of the Nazarene officiated by the Rev. Greg Pressley. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Joe Waldron, Robert Hodge, Brian Kinder, Ed Jones, Sam Jones, and Gene Jones.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Sumter First Church of the Nazarene.
