Obituary for Joseph Boyd "Joe" Bailey Jr.

Joseph “Joe” Boyd Bailey, Jr., 78, beloved husband of Linda Ruth Smith Bailey, died Monday, July 25, 2022, at his home.

Born September 29, 1943, in Darlington, he was a son of the late Joseph B. Bailey, Sr. and the late Margaret Ward Bailey. Mr. Bailey was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Oswego where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and custodian for many years. He was a graduate of Edmunds High School. Mr. Bailey was a Land Agent for CP&L (now Duke Energy) and retired after 45 years of service. He was a past member of the Kiwanis Club, Oswego Hunt Club and the CP&L Pioneer Club. He was volunteer with the Sumter School District #17 Literacy Program and Boy Scouts of America, and an Oswego School Bus Trainer.

Survivors in addition to his wife of 57 years include two children, Betsy B. Reynolds (Dan) and Alice B. Norris (Joe); 3 grandchildren; John Lee Campbell (Jenna), Daniel Bailey Reynolds, and Margaret Elizabeth “Maggie” Norris; two sisters, Delores “Tea” Osborne (Bill) of Lincolnton, NC and Cecelia B. Bass of Garner, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Cindy Bailey; his brother, Paul C. Bailey; and a brother-in-law, Walter Bass.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tim Whited officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Brian Bass, Kevin Bass, Ronnie Beatson, Bobby Beatson, Al Hubbard, and Joe “Trey” Butler.

Honorary pallbearers will be Marvin Skinner, Hazel Ridgeway, Billy McCoy, Randy Cubbage, John Outlaw, Buzz Moore, Bobby Lowder, Al McElveen, and other former CP&L-Duke Energy coworkers.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Bethel United Methodist Church and other times at the home.
