Obituary for Margaret Ann "Nanny" Carter (McLeod)

Margaret Ann “Nanny” McLeod Carter, 84, widow of Ernest Lee Carter, Sr., died Monday July 4, 2022, at her home.

Born March 28, 1938, in Pinewood, she was a daughter of the late Junius McLeod and the late Ella Brown McLeod. She was a member of Green Acres Assembly of God. Mrs. Carter retired from Campbell’s Soup Company and later worked as an in-home caregiver. He greatest joy came from spending time with her family. She enjoyed working in her yard, especially tending to her flowers.

Survivors include two children, Wendie Griffin (Chris), and Nick Carter (Jennifer Marie) both of Sumter; six grandchildren, Sherry Jacks (Jamie), Clayton Carter (Stacy), Kevin Carter, Heath Griffin (Julie), Dane Griffin (Hillary), and Christopher Geddings; eleven great grandchildren; a special friend, James Hudson; a special nephew, Olin “Knocker” Shirer; and a number of other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Junius McLeod, Jr., James McLeod, Kenneth McLeod, and Jack McLeod, and two sisters, Sadie Hensley, and Dora Polinskey.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Green Acres Assembly of God with the Rev. Michael Bowman officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Matt Phillips, Chad Phillips, Michael Smith, Kevin Carter, Clayton Carter, and Knocker Shirer.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Green Acres Assembly of God.
