Obituary for Doris Mahanes Taylor

Doris Mahanes Taylor, 97, widow of James Robert “Bob” Taylor, died Monday, March 14, 2022, at her home.

Born December 20, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Hugh Elliott Mahanes and the late Elizabeth Wash Mahanes. Mrs. Taylor attended and graduated from Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, VA with a degree in English. She also attended Blue Mountain College in Mississippi. She was a missionary in Texas between her junior and senior years, followed by the WMU Training Center in Louisville, Kentucky where she met her future husband and made many lifelong friends. Mrs. Taylor was a member of Shandon Presbyterian Church in Columbia for many years. She attended Bible Fellowship Church in Sumter regularly in her later years. She was active with her Presbyterian Women’s Circle until her death. She was supported by her Shandon Circle members and friends as well as members of Bible Fellowship Church who visited, sent cards, texts, food, flowers, and called regularly. Doris and her husband were actively involved in the Sumter Shepherd’s Center for many years.

Survivors include four children, Beth Powell (Mike) of Sumter, Jane Duncan (Ben) of Gastonia, NC, Scot Taylor (Michelle) of Florida, and Kirk Taylor (Andria) of Chicago, IL; a daughter-in-law, Katrina Taylor of California thirteen grandchildren; and twenty-nine great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark Elliott Taylor.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bible Fellowship Church with the Rev. Dr. David Richardson and the Rev. John Cook officiating. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia.

The family would like to express a special thanks to Amedisys Hospice and their “Special Angels”, Lindsey, and Chaplain, Dr. David Richardson; and their sincerest gratitude to the sitters, Laura and Joe, Mary, Ruby, Katie, Jesse, Stella, Velma, and Susan who stayed and cared for both Doris and Bob.
