Harvey Jr. was born to the late Harvey Gainey Sr. and Thelma Gainey on November 10, 1939 in Hartsville, SC. He went to Edmunds High School in Sumter and married his high school sweetheart, Mary Frances Austin, on July 2, 1960. Harvey and Frances would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary this year.

Harvey was primarily a roofing contractor in a family business he ran with his father and then his son over the course of 43 years before he retired. He was an entrepreneur who loved to make things; he dabbled in sheet metal work, car sales, house building, and other business projects. He was also passionate at his favorite hobby: refurbishing old cars.

He loved God, and he loved people. He made many friends throughout his life and felt that helping a friend in need was his duty – it was certainly his pleasure.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Gainey Sr. and Thelma Gainey; his stepmother, Aloma Jean Gainey; his stepsister, Barbara Gail Hodge; and sister, Peggy Gainey Singleton.

Harvey is survived by his wife, Frances Austin Gainey; his son, Harvey Wayne Gainey (Ashley K. Cox); his daughter, Beth Gainey Stoner (Glenn); his previous daughter-in law, Brenda Hanna Gainey; grandson, Keith Jordan Gainey; and stepbrother, Norman Paul Davis, Sr (Diane).

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Rogers, Jimmy Truett, Harvey Achziger, Kent Tyler, Don Gainey, and Gerald Gainey.

The family extends sincere thanks to the staff of Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital for the care, compassion, and comfort provided during our loved one’s stay.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Alice Drive Baptist Church, 1305 Loring Mill Rd., Sumter, SC 29150.
