Obituary for Shirley Lee Baker (Herndon)

Shirley Lee Herndon Bailey Baker, 86, widow of John Earl Bailey, Sr., and Dallas Marvin Baker, Sr., died Tuesday March 16, 2021 at her home. Her canine companion, Mr. Willie, also died by her side.

Born January 22, 1935, in Walterboro, she was a daughter of the late Leroy T. Herndon and the late Corrie Mae Carter Herndon. Mrs. Baker attended Smithville Pentecostal Church. Her life revolved around her family and sports. She enjoyed watching and following her children and grandchildren as they played different sports. She especially loved baseball and was an avid follower of the Sumter P-15’s and her South Carolina Gamecocks. Mrs. Baker was a past Sumter P-15’s “Fan of the Year” honoree. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include her children, Jonnie Sue Edwards (Larry) of Sumter, Sara Crawford of Little River, Donna Baker (Jimmy), Becky Blakley (Archie), John Earl “Bubba” Bailey, Jr. (Nikki), Wayne Bailey (Melissa), and Paul Bailey all of Sumter, Judy Snider (Richard) of Lexington, and Dallas Marvin “Bubba” Baker, Jr. (Priscilla) of Manning; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Bailey Kelly; a grandson, Timothy L. Baker, and seven siblings.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel officiated by the Rev. Ronnie Morris and the Rev. Rhonda Bowman. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Grandsons and great grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friend from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of Jimmy and Donna Baker.
