Obituary for James L. Broadway

James L. Broadway, 82, husband of Belen Broadway, died Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at Prisma Health Tuomey.

Born January 22, 1938, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Wilkins Lawrence Broadway and the late Elsie Smith Broadway. He retired from the Civil Service at Fort Jackson. He was a member of Wedgefield Baptist Church where he served as a former deacon and Men’s Fellowship Coordinator. He was a Past Master of the Sumter Masonic Lodge. Mr. Broadway was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of the Big Oak Hunt Club in McBee. In his earlier years, he was involved in the Sumter Little League Program and umpired both baseball and basketball.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, James Lawrence Broadway, Jr. (Cheryl) of Mt. Pleasant and Johnnie L. Broadway (Julie) of Elgin; a daughter, Karen Broadway of Flint, TX; four grandchildren, Jennifer Robinson, Jade McCauley, Dylan McCauley, and Tristan McCauley; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Charlotte Hill (Glenn) of Sumter; and a brother, Robert Broadway of CA.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William Broadway.

A funeral service will be held at 3 P.M. Sunday at Wedgefield Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Goff officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 P.M. Sunday at Wedgefield Baptist Church and other times at the home of his sister, 3099 Tamarah Way.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wedgefield Baptist Church, 6220 Wedgefield Rd., Sumter, SC 29168.
