Obituary for Roy McCathern

Roy McCathern, 86, husband of Nadine Brunson McCathern, died Sunday, January 3, 2021, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born August 19, 1934, in Mayesville, he was a son of the late Chalmers O’Neal McCathern and the late Sarah Louise McCoy McCathern. He served as a SSGT in the Army National Guard from 1955 – 1959. He was a member of Northside Memorial Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Property Committee Chairman, and Youth Sunday School teacher. He was the owner of McCathern’s Garage. He was a mechanic and amateur racer at Sumter Speedway. Following his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking and refinishing furniture in his shop. He loved spending time at his lake house with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years; five daughters, Vicki M. Barwick (Johnny), Patti M. Welch (Steve), Donna M. Twine (Smokey), Sheri M. McDowell (Scott), and Nancy M. Ferriell (Mark); twelve grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Chalmers O. McCathern, Jr.

A graveside service will be held at 1 P.M. Wednesday in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Johnson officiating.

In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting no visitation at the home.
