Obituary for Louis Philip "Phil" Ross

Rev. Louis Philip “Phil” Ross, 76, husband of Judith “Judy” Starr Ross, died Tuesday, September 1, 2020 at his home.

Born January 4, 1944, in Sumter, he was a son of the late John Quince Ross, Jr. and the late Dorothy Jackson Ross. Rev. Ross was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church where he served as the Pastoral Care Minister. Other ministries included: part time Minister of Music and Youth at Bayview Baptist Church in Columbia, Trinity Baptist Church in West Columbia, and Trinity Presbyterian Church in Orangeburg. He was a past Executive Director of Crosswell Children’s Home, Executive Director of Brookland Plantation Home for Boys in Orangeburg, and Director of Social Services at Carolina Children’s Home in Columbia. He was a Past President of the SC Association of Children’s Homes. He was a member of the Sumter Civic Chorale, and a former member of the Rotary Club of Sumter-Sunrise and was a Paul Harris Fellow.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, two sons, Christopher Philip Ross (Cindy) of Blythewood, and Ryan Starr Ross (Amber) of Greensboro, NC; two granddaughters, Tiffany Marin Ross and Ellyana Marie Ross; two brothers, Robert Neil Ross (Joyce) of Sumter, and Thomas Edward Ross of Horatio; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John Quince Ross, III.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Clay Smith officiating.
