Obituary for Harriett Brunson Saunders

Harriett Brunson Saunders, 84, died August 23, 2020 at her home while in Hospice Care.

Mrs. Saunders was born December 24, 1936, in Sumter, SC to Myrtis Jane (Smiley) and Henry Hyatt Brunson.

She attended Edmunds High School in Sumter, SC and was a member of Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church. She loved music and enjoyed playing both the piano and organ and was the director of the youth choir at Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church in Sumter. She also worked with Sumter’s youth at the Sumter Canteen on Salem Street for a number of years. After relocating to Atlanta in 1977, she taught piano out of her home.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Carl F. Saunders, Jr. of Sumter; two sons, Frasier Saunders, III (Vickie) of Dalzell and Garrett B. Saunders (Barbara) of Maysville, GA.; four grandsons, Carl F. Saunders IV, Hyatt H. Saunders Jr., Sean D. Saunders and Brett M. Saunders; one granddaughter, Mary “Mollie” S. Oswald; one great granddaughter, Elizabeth “LeNoir” Oswald; and a niece, Sandra Carrico French of Florida.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Elaine Carrico; and a son, Hyatt H. Saunders.

There will be graveside services at Brunson Cemetery, 2326 Plowden Mill Road, Sumter SC, 29153 officiated by the Reverend Jerry Watson and the Reverend Nancy Reed on August 27, 2020 at 12:00 PM. All attendees are asked to wear masks and practice social distancing.

Pallbearers will be Rick Johnson, Bobby Sandifer, Wendell Prescott, Terry Prescott, David Prescott, and Thomas Oswald.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church, 1510 Plowden Mill Rd., Sumter, SC 29153.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
