Obituary for Helen Frances Young (Kirby)

Helen Frances Young, age 80, passed away on April 14, 2020 at home, with her family by her side.

Helen was born in Mechanicsville, South Carolina on February 21, 1940 to Joseph and Cora Kirby and had five siblings. Helen was wed to Joseph “Wayne” Young of Oklahoma. At that time, her husband, Wayne, was serving active duty in the United States Air Force. During their 38 years of marriage, Wayne’s active duty service took them around the world. Finally, they settled at their last duty station at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., where they resided in Oxon Hill, Maryland. At this time, Helen began working for the Air National Guard while pursuing her degree in Accounting from University of Maryland. Her husband passed away January 1995. Helen continued her service to the nation and served faithfully for 35 years until her retirement in September 2014.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne, and her siblings, Dot, Julia, Annie Ruth, Faye and Tommy.

She is survived by her four children: Janet, Greg, Mark and Jason Young, 9 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandson. She leaves behind nieces and nephews who she loved dearly and many close friends.

An outdoor service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Sumter, South Carolina on Wednesday, April 22 at 2 pm.
