Obituary for Helen Oliver Freeman

Helen O. Freeman passed away on Palm Sunday, April 5, 2020 at her home at Morningside of Sumter senior living center in Sumter, SC.

She was born March 21, 1921 at Dogtail Branch, Onslow County, NC, daughter of Willie Kendall Oliver and Leona Gerock Oliver. She moved to Sumter in 1958 and had a successful career at Tuomey Hospital, eventually retiring as Assistant Director of food and dietary services. During her retirement, she then volunteered at Tuomey for more than twenty years. Helen was a faithful Christian and an active member of First Baptist Church for more than sixty years. Devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she loved her family generously and completely. She will be missed more than words can say.

She is survived by her daughter Kay Oldhouser Davis of Sumter, SC; her sons, Alan Powell of Houston, TX and Keith Powell of Pawley's Island, SC; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and her sister Greta Givens of Thompson Station, TN. She is also pre-deceased by her daughter Amelia R. Jordan, and her husbands, Leo P. Adams; W. Clinton Powell; and Charlie Freeman.

A private burial will be held in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery and a memorial service will be held in Sumter at the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel, both at a date still to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to First Baptist Church, 107 E. Liberty Street, Sumter, SC 29150, or to the Helen O. Freeman Scholarship Endowment, USC Sumter, 200 Miller Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
