Obituary for Samuel D. Pierson

Samuel D. Pierson peacefully passed away in November 2019. He was 86.

Sam was born in Sumter to parents Evie Osteen and George Pierson. Sam attended Edmund’s High School (now Sumter High School), joined the U.S. Marines and proudly served in the Korean War. After the war, he married, attended George Washington University, and raised his family in the Washington DC/northern Virginia area.

He was a highly successful engineer and after years of working in industry, he fulfilled his passion and vision of owning his own company. He built his company from the ground up which culminated in substantial contracts with major companies throughout the Eastern Seaboard and abroad.

He was an accomplished pilot who enjoyed flying friends and family around the southeastern U.S. in his Cessna and Piper aircraft.
After several decades he returned to his beloved South Carolina where he enjoyed farming, gardening, planting trees, especially fruit trees, feeding hummingbirds, traveling, and entertaining family and friends.

His antique tractors have been donated and will soon be on display at the Agricultural Museum of SC in Pendleton. A bench with his name engraved will also be displayed on the museum grounds.

He is survived by sons Ricky, Steven (Shawnare), and John, daughter Sandra, and siblings J. Baxter Pierson, Frances Kolar and Hazel Wilson, as well as grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces/nephews and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, January 11 at 4 p.m. at the O’Donnell House, 120 East Liberty Street, Sumter. A dinner reception will immediately follow the service.
