Obituary for Lewis Quince "Lou" Dail Jr.

Lewis Quince Dail, Jr. (Lou), age 84, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, December 28, 2019, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born at his home in Chinquapin, N.C. on November 23, 1935, he was the son of the late Quince and the late Verline (Sholar) Dail. At the age of 17, he left home to join the United States Air Force (USAF). While serving in Japan, he met and married “the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen,” his wife of 58 years, Sachiko (Asada) Dail. Lou retired from the USAF with 24 years of service in communications and settled in Dalzell to raise his family. He finished his formal schooling while in the military and later earned an associate degree from Sumter Technical College. After 20 years of working as a quality controller, Lou retired from the U.S. Broach Company. He and his wife owned and operated Sachi’s Oriental Store that served the Sumter Asian community for more than 40 years. In addition, Lou officiated football, basketball and baseball at the high school and collegiate levels. He was known for his dance moves during basketball games and was the only umpire to ever break his arm at Sarge Frye Field, tripping over first base.

Lou was a devoted and loving husband, daddy, papa, and friend. He was a Ham radio enthusiast which was part of his USAF profession and enjoyed wood working, gardening, and sharing stories over coffee at the Huddle House with his friends. Lou will be remembered for the love and time he gave freely to his family and friends, and the help he provided to anyone who asked.

He is survived by his wife, Sachiko, his three daughters Debbie (Richard) Elmore, Colleen (Rhett) Motley, and Missy (Rick) Sawyer. His pride and joys were his grandchildren Catie, Cameron, Claire, Sam, Zac, Mac, Savannah and Walker Reese and his great grandchild, Nara James. He is survived by 3 of his 14 siblings, Junie Carol Dail, Ernie Harold Dail, and Joyce Williams.

Visitation will be held in the Fellowship Hall at Dalzell United Methodist Church, Saturday, January 4, 2020 from 11 a.m. to Noon and will be followed by a celebration of his life in the church sanctuary at Noon. Interment will be Monday, January 6, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Fort Jackson National Cemetery with Military Honors.
The family would like to thank the many friends who are like family for their support in so many ways, especially in the past year. We are forever grateful for each of you.
