Obituary for Hugh T Lofton

Hugh T. Lofton, 95, widower of Ruby Nesbitt Lofton, died Friday, December 27, 2019 at his home.

Born April 15, 1924, in Darlington, he was a son of the late Clyde H. Lofton and the late Emmie Swann Lofton. Mr. Lofton was a member of New Salem Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was a retired insurance agent. Mr. Lofton enjoyed playing softball and pitched the first perfect game ever recorded in slow-pitch softball.

Survivors include three daughters, Paulette Sexton (Pat) and Jeannie DuRant (Gene) both of Sumter, and Debra Lynn Gravely (Tommy) of Pickens; five grandchildren, Dena Jordan, Patrick Sexton, Shellie Murdaugh (Neal), Ted DuRant (Liz), and Zachary Johnson; two great grandchildren, Tyler Jordan, and Devon Sexton; one brother, Don Lofton of Washington; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, J.C. Lofton; and four sisters, Virginia Baker, Frances Mears, Betty Boan, and Doris Baker.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eddie Richardson officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Patrick Sexton, Ted DuRant, and Zak Johnson; and nephews, Jesse Wilson, Jody Wilson, and Donnie Lofton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of Gene and Jeannie DuRant, 2001 Beckwood Road.

Memorials may be sent to a charity of one’s choice.
