Obituary for James M. "Gene" Disher Sr.

James M. “Gene” Disher, Sr., 67, husband of Jennifer Works Disher, died Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at Prisma Health Tuomey.

Born March 8, 1952, in Florence, he was a son of the late Lory M. Disher and the late Lillie Mae Wallace Disher. He was adopted and reared by the late Cleo Disher and the late Sally Disher. Gene was one of the first Paramedics in Sumter. He retired from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Department. He was a member of Crosspoint Baptist Church and the Sumter Cruiser’s Car Club.

Survivors include his wife, Jennifer; five children, Angela Winstead (Chester) of Joplin, MO, James M. Disher, Jr. (Patty) of Montoursville, PA, Crystal R. Disher (Allen) of Sumter, Teresa Renee Wheeler (Greg) of Sumter, and Wesley Allen Disher (Abbey) of Sumter; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four brothers, Jerry Disher (Gayle) of Sumter, Jimmy Disher of Santee, Terry Disher (Cindy) of Camden, and Ronnie Disher of Santee; and a sister, Joeanne Rabon (James) of Camden; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Osteen and Betty Sue Boykin.

Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. Sunday at Crosspoint Baptist Church with the Rev. John Sorrells officiating. Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be sons and grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers will be current and former members of the Sumter County EMS and Sumter County Sheriff’s Department.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Saturday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.
