Obituary for Ernest C "Rock, Treedog, Big Pa" Jones Jr.

Ernest C. “Rock” “Treedog” “Big Pa” Jones, Jr., 74, passed from this life surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at his home.

Born July 6, 1944, in Florence, he was a son of the late Ernest C. Jones, Sr., the late Irene Kea Jones Davis, and the late Lewis A. Davis. He worked at Shaw Lumber Company, retired from DuPont after 26 years of service, and South Atlantic Canners-Coca Cola in Bishopville after 12 ½ years of service. He also served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard. He was a member of Ashwood Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Men’s Brotherhood. He loved serving God and doing for others.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Gwyn Grant Jones of Ashwood; a daughter, Tanya Hope Jones Jennings (Scott) of Summerville; two grandsons, Thomas Grant Jennings (Sahariela) of Cameron, NC and Michael Keith Jennings (Samantha) of Mt. Olive, NC; two great-grandsons, Jackson Cage Casey and Afton McCoy Mathis-Jennings; two great-granddaughters, Annavera Jo-Lynn Mathis-Jennings and Avery Jazania Jennings; his best friend and pal, “Sparkie”; a special Godson, Lee Marshall of Ashwood; and a sister, Peggie Vaughn (Larry) of Ashwood.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ernest Todd Jones; and a brother, James Ernest Jones.

A celebration of life will be held at 3 P.M. Thursday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. William Archer and the Rev. Sammy Geddings officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 P.M. Thursday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home, 195 Holman Rd., Sumter, SC 29153.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
