Obituary for Loyd Russell McElveen

Loyd Russell McElveen, 86, husband of Mildred Munn McElveen, died Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Alamance Hospice Home in Burlington, North Carolina surrounded by his family.

Born December 10, 1931, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Wesley L. McElveen and the late Edna Osteen McElveen. He was a1960 graduate of The Citadel and a member of the last veteran class. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Russell was a longtime faithful member of Grove Park Baptist Church in Burlington, North Carolina. He retired after a 35 year career from Western Electric/AT&T/Lucent.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years; children, Janice McElveen Holmes (Ken) of Harrisburg, North Carolina, Loyd McElveen, Jr. (Denise) of Sanford, North Carolina, Sharon McElveen of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Amy McElveen of Greensboro, North Carolina; loving grandsons, granddaughters, and great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Gobe McElveen (Pat) and Emery McElveen (Nancy) all of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Kathy; and three brothers, James McElveen, Phil McElveen, and Robert McElveen.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday, May 6, 2018, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Steve Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

A celebration of life service will be held in Burlington, North Carolina at a later date.

Pallbearers will be Kris Holmes, Wesley McElveen, Landon, Carter, Joshua Howes, Chris Buchanan, and Bruce Bradham.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 P.M. Sunday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, North Carolina 27215.
