Weldon Heyward “Skip” Shumate, 90, widower of Francis Shelton Shumate, died Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Palmetto Health Tuomey.
Born in the Kellytown Community of Darlington County, he was a son of the late Tom Shumate and the late Nellie Atkinson Shumate. Mr. Shumate served two years in the U.S, Army and retired from the U.S. Air Force after twenty-two years of service. Following his retirement, he worked with Civil Service at Shaw A.F.B. and Fort Heating and Air.
Survivors include one son, Robert Shumate (Pam) of Sumter; three grandchildren, Jason H. Flagler, Brittany Thrower, and Justin Shumate; one great granddaughter, Brooklin Thompson; one brother, Peyton Shumate (Linda) of Myrtle Beach; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at 4 p.m. Monday in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Wayne McElveen officiating.
Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
