Obituary for Ed Hucks Jr.

Ed  Hucks Jr.
Ed Hucks, Jr. was born in Aynor, SC on April 30, 1927, and passed peacefully on March 18, 2018.

Ed was the middle son, “Big Ed”, of Ed Hucks, Sr. and Orella Magnolia “Nolie” Allen Hucks.

He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings, Albertine Squires, Calbreth Hucks, Edna Floyd, Lacy Hucks, Clarence Hucks, Florine Hardee, and Allen Hucks.

Ed and his wife, Lillie McCoy Hucks, were married 67 years.

He leaves behind his wife, Lillie; and three children and their families, Cynthia (Doug) Smith, Edward Frank “Buddy” (Julie) Hucks, and Nancy “Tootsie” (Jeff) Billings; 9 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.

Ed attended Berry College before joining the Navy and, with the assistance of the GI Bill, transferred to the best place on earth, Clemson University, graduating in the Class of 1949. After a brief teaching stint, he worked for the USDA-Farmers Home Administration for 30 years before retiring. Ed was involved in a second career in real estate sales and appraisal in Bishopville, SC for 21 years. Ed & Lillie left Bishopville, SC in 2003 to live in Garden City, SC where Ed’s favorite pastime was driving his golf cart to see the ocean and converse with others. Most recently Ed & Lillie moved to Covenant Place, Sumter, SC.

Over the course of his life, Ed was active in numerous organizations including Kiwanis, Shriners, American Society of Farm Management and Rural Appraisers, the Masonic Lodge, and the Clemson Alumni Association.

Special thanks go out to Nurse Kim (Kindred Hospice, Savannah, GA), Amedisys team (Sumter, SC), his Savannah caregivers, Covenant Place (Sumter, SC) and all who took the time out of their schedules to visit and/or call him in his latter years. You made his days happy ones.

A memorial service celebrating Ed’s life will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday, March 24, 2018, at Salem Baptist Church, 4008 Salem Road, Aynor, SC, with reception following.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Mr. Ed Hucks may be made to the CLEMSON UNIVERSITY Class of 1949 Golden Anniversary Endowment. Mail gifts to: Clemson University Foundation, POB 1889, Clemson, SC 29633.
