Obituary for William Lee Webb Sr.

William Lee “Bill” Webb, Sr., husband of Shelby Jean Woodard Webb, died Monday, February 26, 2018, at Palmetto Health Tuomey.

Born May 22, 1937, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, he was a son of the late Arthur and Hazel Webb of New Albany, Indiana. He retired from the Sumter Public Works Department in 1998 and the South Carolina National Guard with the Rank of SSGT in 1992. He served with the 151st Field Artillery Brigade located in Sumter, SC. Bill also served in the U.S. Air Force form 1955-1961 in Anchorage, Alaska and Seymour Johnson AFB in North Carolina. Specializing in aircraft maintenance for the 71st Air Sea Rescue Squadron. His total time of service was 23 years. He was mobilized for support, Operation Desert Storm/Shield in 1991 serving at Fort Erwin, California.

Bill’s service awards include Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (One Oak Leaf Cluster), Reserve Components Achievement Medal (Three Oak Clusters), National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, armed Forces Reserve Medal, Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon (two devices), Army Service Ribbon, S.C. Active Service Medal (15 years), S.C. Achievement Ribbon, ARNG Recruiter Badge, The South Carolina Unit Citation Ribbon, and the Georgia Commendation Medal.

Bill was active in community service, volunteering at the WJB Dorn Veterans Hospital in Columbia, SC, assisting veterans on Sunday mornings to chapel services and other duties. He loved his volunteering job serving veterans and always showing his appreciation for their service to our country. He was a member of Northside Memorial Baptist Church of Sumter.

Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years; three children, William Lee Webb, Jr. of Columbia, and Bonnie Kaye Wallace, and Loyd Allen Webb both of Sumter; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Arthur T. Webb of Cordon, Indiana; and sisters, Barbara, Violet, and Mary all of Indiana.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert L. Webb; and a sister, Maurice.

Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon, Friday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Neal Sweet officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Elmore-Cannon Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.
