Obituary for Eunice Smith (Duvall)


Eunice Duvall Smith, 95, of Sumter, widow of Homer Smith, died peacefully Friday morning at Life Care Center of Charleston.

Born December 23, 1921 in Greenwood, SC, she was the daughter of Florence Felton Duvall and Samuel Theodore (Dory) Duvall. She was preceded in death by all 10 of her brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Smith attended Ashwood Central High School where she was a stand-out athlete in basketball. After high school graduation, she lived in Trenton, NJ and attended Rider Business College. She worked for the NJ State Hospital in the recreation department as a teacher during the 2nd World War. Following the war, she and Homer married and made their home in Sumter. She was a long time, active member of Northside Memorial Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, Baptist Training Union and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union. She was an employee of Tuomey Hospital where she worked in the business office for 30 years.

Mrs. Smith is survived by two sons, Tim (Jan) of Leeds, Alabama, and Ron (Kris) of Summerville; five grandchildren: Stacy Smith Walsh (Kevin) of West Hartford, Connecticut; Melissa Smith Brown of Powdersville; Jason Smith (Sunshine) of Columbia, Whitney Anne Smith Holt (Lucas) of Effingham; and Aaron Wheeler (Carrie) of Phoenix, Arizona. Mrs. Smith has 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great- granddaughter. She was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors at 2:00 PM on Monday, June 19, at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home followed by the service at 3:00 PM. The Reverend Jimmy Holley will officiate. Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery.

Pall bearers will be Jason Smith, Lucas Holt, Aaron Wheeler, Jeremy Buzhardt, Daniel Campbell and Josh Rumsey.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to The Northside Memorial Baptist Church, 1004 N. Main Street, Sumter S.C 29153.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
