Edwin W. Oliver, Jr., 81, loving husband of Jean E. Oliver and follower of Jesus Christ, died Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Norfolk, VA, he was a son of the late Edwin W. Oliver, Sr., and the late Clara Belle Williams Oliver Stutheit. Mr. Oliver was a member of Westside Baptist Church. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years of service as a Master Sergeant and was a veteran of the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Following his U.S. Air Force career he served 20 years in law enforcement and retired as Police Chief of Omega, GA. Mr. Oliver was a lover of people and a dedicated servant of his family, country, and community.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years; a daughter, Debra Lynn Oliver Griswold (Elwyn) of Sumter; four grandchildren, Melissa Stubbs (Stacy), Candice Oliver, Jason Griswold (Kayla), and Jamie Brown; 13 great grandchildren; one sister, Barbara Ann Herman of California; a special nephew, John Ganaway (Carla); and a large number of other special family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James “Jimmy” Edwin Oliver; his special step-father, William “Bill” Stutheit, and a sister, Mildred Oliver.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Aaron Reed officiating. Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be his buddies from Strong Arms Gun Shop.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
